Things to Do at Crater Lake - Fisher Nicholson Realty

Interested in moving to Klamath Falls, Oregon? This city has a lot to offer its residents, especially those who prefer beautiful scenery and outdoor space to cosmopolitan attractions. Let's take a look at five popular activities to do at Crater Lake, one of the most distinctive landmarks near our Klamath Falls homes for sale.

  1. Hike the Garfield Peak Trail - Crater Lake National Park, Crater Lake, OR 97604
This trail along the rugged outer edge of Oregon's Crater Lake offers some spectacular views of the water, Wizard Island, and the surrounding cliffs. At just 3 to 4 miles or 2 to 3 hours of walking, the Garfield Peak Trail is a relatively short and easy trek, so even occasional hikers can enjoy it. It also tends to be slightly less crowded than the nearby Mount Scott Trail, which offers similar views. You can do the hike alone or with a group led by an assigned ranger from the Crater Lake Lodge.

  2. Take a Tour of Rim Drive - Crater Lake National Park, Crater Lake, OR 97604
You can enjoy the majesty of Crater Lake by car or bicycle with this 33-mile paced course that circles the crater's rim. There are over 30 outlooks along Rim Drive where visitors can park their cars and observe the lake from a scenic viewpoint. The road here is also used by many cyclists and can be quite challenging to navigate with its narrow and winding route, so it is recommended for experienced drivers only. If you want a similar experience without driving yourself, you can take a trolley tour around the same route. These tours include at least five outlook stops each and are narrated by a park ranger with knowledge of the history and geography of the area.

  3. Visit Rim Village - Crater Lake National Park, Rim Village Dr., OR 97604
This tiny cluster of historic buildings is named for its location right on the rim of Crater Lake. Here you can find a gift shop, a café and snack bar, some restrooms, and the upscale Crater Lake Lodge. You can also consult with some local rangers in the visitors' center for more information on the local area. Rim Village is handicap accessible and offers excellent views of the lake for those who aren't interested in the surrounding trails.

  4. Explore Wizard Island - Rim Drive, Crater Lake, OR 97604
At the center of Crater Lake lies a small island known as Wizard Island. This intriguing landmark is actually a volcanic cinder cone left over from the initial volcanic eruption that created the crater thousands of years ago. Now, visitors can access this island during the summer months by taking a scenic boat tour that stops at a small dock on its south shore. Once you arrive, you can hike the two trails available on the island or simply explore the area at your own pace.

  5. Walk the Plaikni Falls Trail - Pinnacles Road, Crater Lake, OR 97604
Those who prefer to stay away from cliffs and rocky terrain may prefer a stroll along the Plaikni Falls Trail. This is a relaxing trail with plenty of rest stops for you to catch your breath, and you can hear the sound of running water all the way from the entrance and along the entire hike. When you finally get to the top of this arrow-shaped trail, you'll be greeted by the picturesque Plaikni Falls in a sun-soaked stony clearing.
