Storing Seasonal Decor - Fisher Nicholson Realty

The holidays may be over, but you probably still have decorations to put away. Our real estate agents suggest taking a little time to organize seasonal decor as you put it away. You'll be glad you did when you're more easily able to find everything you need for a festive holiday season next year.

  1. Organize Your Decorations
When you take down your tree and other holiday décor, organize the items by group. If you organize your decorations by where you use them, it will be much easier to find them next year. It will also prevent them from being damaged or broken if you pack them right. If you don't have the original box for your tree, you might consider buying a tree bag on wheels. It will make it easier to move, and you won't have to worry about losing any pieces. If you have a real tree, make sure to recycle it once you take it down.

  2. Get A Few Boxes or Totes
Find a few boxes that you can put your decorations in. If you want to keep them in airtight containers, you can buy totes from your local department stores. Totes come in various sizes and are easy to stack when you put them in storage. They will also keep moisture from seeping in and causing discoloration and other types of damage at bay. Get a box or tote for each type of decoration so that they don't get all jumbled up once you put them away.

  3. Label and Wrap Your Lights
The best way to store your Christmas lights is to cut 4x12-inch pieces of cardboard. Take a small piece of masking tape and write the length of the strand and where you use it. Once you have each strand labeled, wrap them around a piece of cardboard and tape the end to secure it. Place all of the wrapped lights carefully in a box according to where they are used. It will make them much easier to find, and there won't be any tangled messes to worry about next Christmas.

  4. Look Into an Ornament Chest
If you have a lot of glass ornaments, it may be a good idea to invest in an ornament chest. An ornament chest comes with trays that have several individual compartments that will protect your ornaments from breakage while they are in storage. If you're looking for Klamath Falls homes for sale and plan on moving before the next holiday season, investing in an ornament chest is by far the safest way to move all of your favorite Christmas ornaments.

  5. Find a Storage Tote for Your Wrapping Paper
Wrapping paper on long cardboard tubes can be hard to store. You can, however, buy totes and bags that are designed for holding several tubes of paper at once. They're sturdy enough to hold both tubes and sheets so they won't be damaged or torn while they're being stored. Totes can be found that lie flat or stand up tall and will easily fit in a closet or under your bed.
