Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's Day, or so the saying goes. If that's not true, it's still a great day to celebrate Irish culture. Our real estate agents want to share some hints to bring the history and legends to life with a little family fun.
- Start the day with dinner!
Older children may enjoy helping put dinner in the crockpot so that it can simmer all day. Start with four shredded carrots (or two cups pre-cut), ten baby red potatoes cut in quarters, and one chopped onion at the bottom of the pot. Place four pounds of corned beef brisket on top of the veggies and cover with three cups of water and two cups of beef broth. Sprinkle spices from the flavor packet that came with brisket on top. Cook on low for eight hours. An hour before serving, stir in 1/2 head of shredded cabbage and cook for another hour. Dinner will be ready and waiting for you at the end of the day.
- Wear the green
Challenge everyone in the family to wear green or accessorize their clothing with green for work or school. Little ones may need some assistance. If this is a challenge, prepare in advance by heading to the dollar store and picking up some beads, hats, ties, or pins to brighten the day. Wearing green is supposed to make you invisible to leprechauns, who will pinch you if they see you!
- Hunt for gold
Explain to anyone who doesn't already know that leprechauns hide their gold at the foot of the rainbow. You can make rainbows inside the house by shining a flashlight on a CD. Make them move around the room or wherever you would like the kids to hunt. You can make this activity educational by explaining how rainbows are formed. Hide plastic or chocolate coins around the house for the kids to find. Be careful to keep chocolate away from pets as it is toxic.
- Celebrate after dinner with green treats
A drop of green food coloring will instantly convert adult beverages, clear sodas, and seltzers into festive drinks. If time allows, bake sugar cookies and frost them with green icing. Alternatively, you can frost packaged cookies. Add a drop or two of food coloring to a tub of white frosting or frost with plain white and sprinkle with green sugar. They are especially tasty when served next to a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream! If you'd like to avoid excess sugar, serve crackers or chips with guacamole instead. It may not be Irish, but the lovely green color will do in a pinch!
- Read bedtime stories
Irish culture is rich with myths and legends, from the magic land of Tir a nÓg, the land of eternal youth and beauty, to the tragic tale of the Children of Lir. What better way to end the evening than to curl up together with a good book? Be careful, though, when reading to little ones as the Irish of old loved a scary story around the fire. Characters like the Banshee and the Abhartach can be very frightening. They may be better suited to adults and older teens. You can find plenty of stories of Fin MacChumhail (McCool), Cucúlin, fairies, and magic online. You can select stories as short as two minutes or as long as half an hour.
