Relocating to Oregon - Fisher Nicholson Realty

Our real estate agents know that depending on where you're from, moving to Oregon can be a bit of an adjustment. Many of our clients love Klamath Falls homes for sale but they wonder if they are ready for an Oregon winter, for example.

Moving to Oregon is well worth it, and many of the concerns new residents have are things they easily adapt to. Let's take a look at what you can expect from the Beaver State and how to make a move easy.

Things to Know About Oregon and Klamath Falls

Let's start at the beginning: Oregon winters are not as fierce as they're purported to be, and that holds true in Klamath Falls as well. Winters can be relatively mild. They get chilly on the rare years when Arctic cold waves pass across the state. Rain is more common than snow.

Klamath Falls is an area well known for its skiing, so it will have moderate snow cover in winter—around 38 inches a year. Average daily temperatures stay in the low to mid 40s even during the coldest months, December and January. There are no major weather hazards to worry about throughout the year.

Klamath Falls itself is a terrific place to live. With a population just under 21,000, it combines big-city amenities with a small-town feel. Sitting on the falls of the Link River, it has built a diverse, modern economy around higher education provided by the Oregon Institute of Technology.

Tips for a Successful Oregon Relocation

These Oregon moving tips will make things simple:

  1. Get Advice from Your Real Estate Agent
Your real estate agent is with you every step of the way as you make your big move to Oregon. The best way to answer any question is to ask your agent first. He or she can connect you with the help you need, such as moving services, or assist you in identifying "can't-miss" steps to take before your move.

  2. Start the Process Early
The sooner you begin your moving process, the better. You'll need to remember to file an online change of address with USPS, set an official date of termination for your utilities, update all your memberships and delivery services, and much more. Develop a "to-do" list early so nothing slips between the cracks.

  3. For Out of State Moves, Consider a Moving Service
Out-of-state moves can be complicated. To avoid the extra costs involved in renting storage space, you may want to use a packing and shipping company. Beware of pricey self-pack services that require you to adhere to a strict timeline. A full-service company offers more value and is usually less expensive.

  4. Get in Touch with Your Oregon Utilities
It often takes a few days for utility companies to transfer services into the name of a new resident, so be sure to get in touch with them at least two weeks before your move-in day (a full month is even better.)

  5. Plan to Handle Vehicle Basics Right Away
Once you arrive in Oregon, one of the most important things you can do is update your car insurance—you have only a few days' grace period to do this. You should also apply for new plates right away.

  6. Take Time to Enjoy Your New Home
Oregon offers world-famous wine, some of the best coffee in the United States, and iconic meals from chicken-fried steak to Voodoo Doughnuts. Schedule a weekend off and order in so you can relax!
