Clean Before You Move - Selling a Home - Fisher Nicholson Realty

When you're preparing to leave a property, you want to ensure that it's clean for the new buyers. Considering most home sellers also move into a new property that they need to clean and organize, cleaning two homes feels a little overwhelming. Our real estate agents suggest following these tips to assist with the cleaning process. 

  • Clean and Pack as Many Items as Possible Before Cleaning the Property
    When you're adding your home to the inventory of Klamath Falls homes for sale, you should work on decluttering all its spaces so it looks more appealing to potential homebuyers. It's also easier to clean a space with fewer items, and you'll have less furniture and decorative items to move.

    Before you start cleaning, pack away as many items as you can. Ensure that you clean these items before you pack them, as you don't want to transport dust and grime to your new home. If possible, move these items out of your home into storage or your new property.
  • Gather All Your Cleaning Supplies
    Assemble a cleaning kit that has everything you need to clean a house, including microfiber cloths, a disinfectant cleaner, paper towels, a glass cleaner, dusting supplies, floor cleaner, broom, mop, dustpan, vacuum, bucket, and rubber gloves.

    Keep this cleaning kit separate from the items that you plan to move so that it doesn't accidentally get moved to your new home. 
  • Clean a Room from Top to Bottom
    When cleaning a room, you want to move from top to bottom. Dust and allergens tend to fall when you clean, and if you mop or vacuum the room first, you'll just get the surfaces dirty again while cleaning and have to do these tasks twice.

  • Complete Dry Cleaning Before Wet Cleaning
    Before you wet clean a surface (like mopping, scrubbing walls with soapy water, or dusting with a spray product), use dry cleaning methods (like vacuuming, sweeping, or wiping surfaces with a dry cloth) to remove dirt and debris.

    Otherwise, if you wet clean a surface with dirt on it, you'll have a muddy mess that makes cleaning take longer and require more effort. 
  • Don't Overlook Windows, Wall Plates, Light Covers, and Doorframes
    As you clean a room, it's easy to overlook certain items like windows and doorframes. However, these surfaces attract a lot of dust and dirt that can make the whole room look dirty and, in the case of windows, impede the flow of natural light into the room.

    Vacuum your windows and doorframes to remove as much grime as possible before cleaning them with a damp cloth. Though paper towels usually aren't a preferable option for cleaning, they tend to work well for cleaning windows because they absorb water and ick that gets into the window tracks.

    Wall plates and light covers are two other areas that are frequently forgotten during a cleaning session but rapidly get dirty. These high-touch surfaces accumulate layers of grime and body oils that make the surface feel tacky. Spray a little bit of cleaner onto a microfiber cloth and use it to wipe the plates and light covers.
