House-hunters looking at Klamath Falls homes for sale are often attracted by the beautiful landscaping. Colorful butterflies visit the lovely flowers that adorn the properties. But some houses attract certain entertaining guests more than others. Our real estate agents have collected a few tips to invite hummingbirds into your yard.
- Add a splash of red
Hummingbirds adore red. It is their favorite color, hands down. But they also love bright purple, orange, and pink. Trumpet-shaped flowers that hold generous portions of nectar also beckon the birds to come to partake of the sweetness. Consider Oregon Firestorm, cloudburst phlox, fuchsia, and nasturtiums to bring a riot of color to your landscaping, and the birds will follow. Many people find that adding streamers of red ribbon to bushes and trees will bring more birds.
- Give them some sugar
You can buy commercially packaged hummingbird food, but it's just as easy to make your own. Just mix one part of sugar into four parts of water and bring the mixture to a boil. Let it cool completely before adding it to a feeder. Don't add red dye. Sugar water spoils in the summer sun, so before you fill a feeder, you should clean it thoroughly with warm, soapy water, cleaning each feeding hole. Rinse carefully to make sure all soap film is eliminated. Unfortunately, ants also love the sugar and will take over the feeder if given the opportunity. You can deter them by adding ant moats to the bottom of each feeder. These are simply cups of water attached to the feeder with a hook that the ants cannot cross.
- Offer them places to rest
We're so used to seeing hummingbirds fluttering their wings to hover around the feeder that we don't always think about them needing perches. But even hummers can use a break now and then. They enjoy the shade of trees and bushes, but if you don't have any in your yard, consider creating artificial perches. You can hang them from the edge of a roof or awning. You can also create a clothesline to accommodate a large number of birds.
- Provide them with water
Hummingbirds expend a lot of energy while foraging for food. They need to drink water as well as nectar. Like children, they also love to play in it. It's not at all unusual to see them playing in the sprinklers, so why not give them their own water feature? You can install a fountain or birdbath to enhance your landscaping and attract the hummers at the same time. You can also add a feeder with plain water instead of the nectar mixture.
- Give them space
As sweet as hummingbirds seem, they are ferocious soldiers when it comes to defending their territory. When you attract several birds to your yard, you'll find yourself amid bird wars if you have an insufficient number of feeders. Adding more of them is the best way to avoid being dive-bombed when you walk near their feeders. But don't place them too close together. You'll want to place the feeders at least 15 feet apart whenever possible.
