Furnishing a First Home - Fisher Nicholson Realty

Buying a new home will put a significant dent in your budget. Regardless of how large or how small the funds you have set aside, some steps our real estate agents recommend will help you stretch your budget and ensure that the most important furnishings don't get forgotten when you move into your new home.

  • Bring in the Basics
Always start with the basics of interior design: Beds, chairs, tables, and a sofa should all be included in this list. You'll also want to consider window coverings so you can enjoy a little privacy as you settle in. A good rule of thumb is that less is more, and the less you have, the less you need to clean.

  • Refurbish and Repurpose
Maybe you love your old desk, but not the color. Or perhaps you have an old cabinet that didn't fit in your old home and spent years languishing in the garage. Now is a good time to decide what can be refurbished and repurposed. That said, if the item doesn't fit or fit your new decor, don't hesitate to donate or recycle it so that it isn't cluttering your new home.

  • Review your Budget
Before you move into a new home, you should always establish a budget for each room in the house. You will want to spend more in higher-traffic rooms (kitchens, living rooms, etc.) than in lower-traffic rooms (dining rooms, basements, etc.) When reviewing your budget, it's a good idea to consider each room and the items you want to include. Knowing the general pricing of each piece of furniture will clarify your budget. And, once clear, you can prioritize spending. Remember, you don't have to purchase everything today, and indeed, most homeowners fill out their homes gradually as they settle in and unpack.

  • Online Inspiration
Once you've found your home among Klamath Falls homes for sale, you can scroll through Pinterest to give you some helpful ideas regarding sizing, style, positioning, color, and more. One word of caution: Don't feel like you have to rush to make a purchase. Let ideas and possibilities marinate in your mind for a few days (or even weeks.) What looks good on the screen today may not be appealing a few weeks from now. Allowing ideas to rest makes it possible to return to the idea and take a fresh look at it from a more neutral perspective.

  • Personalize the Space
Your home is your castle, and you can personalize it any way you want. We recommend establishing a "style sheet" before you move in. This will help you narrow down your search for furniture, floor coverings, window coverings, etc. You want every item within your home to complement one another to create a cohesive and welcoming ambiance.
