Spring Cleaning - Homeowners - Fisher Nicholson Realty

When spring rolls around, it's time to tackle some cleaning chores you ignored during the winter. Spring cleaning can be overwhelming, so our real estate agents suggest a 30-day spring cleaning plan rather than tackling everything at once to help you stay focused and organized. Take a look at some helpful tips for successful spring cleaning.

  • Get Rid of Household Dust
Dust builds up quickly in Klamath Falls homes for sale without regular weekly cleaning. It floats through the air, settles on surfaces, and causes sneezing fits for allergy victims. Follow these tips to get rid of household dust:

    • Wipe down walls, baseboards, and moldings
    • Dust and vacuum air vents
    • Dust or vacuum ceiling lights and lamp shades
    • Dust ceiling fans and household fans, including the blades
    • Dust furniture, shelving, and items on shelves
    • Vacuum blinds, window shades, and draperies
    • Vacuum floors, rugs, upholstery, and throw pillows

  • Deep Clean Your Kitchen
Your kitchen is a hard room to tackle because you need to deep clean your appliances. You can use warm, soapy water to clean the countertops, sinks, dishwasher, and fridge, but you need a safe, eco-friendly degreaser for the microwave, stove, oven, and vent hood.

To clean the fridge, wipe down interior shelves, then pop out removable bins and shelves and clean them with warm, soapy water to eliminate bacteria and spills. To clean the stove and oven, remove and clean burners, metal racks, grease trays, and interior compartments with a degreaser. When things are clean, don't forget to replace old kitchen sponges and rubber gloves with new ones.

  • Sanitize Your Bathrooms
It's important to clean and sanitize bathrooms to eliminate germs, mold and mildew, and foul odors. Start by mopping the floor and wiping down cabinets and countertops with warm, soapy water. To clean sinks, bathtubs, and showers, use a non-abrasive cleaner that won't scratch the metal fixtures and porcelain surfaces, then spray shower doors and wipe them dry. Next, sanitize the toilet bowl with an antibacterial toilet cleaner or a mixture of 1/4-cup bleach to 1-gallon water. Scrub the toilet, let the cleaner sit in the bowl for 5 minutes, then flush away the suds.

  • Make Your Windows Sparkle
To clean your windows, you need cleaning rags or paper towels, a squeegee, a spray glass cleaner, a mixture of warm water and white vinegar, and a soft microfiber cloth for drying. Gather your supplies and put them in a bucket or sturdy container with handles so you can carry them from room to room. You also need a step ladder if you have high ceilings and windows you can't reach. To clean sliding doors or doors with glass window panes, use mild soapy water for cleaning and paper towels to dry the exterior glass. This will prevent bringing bacteria indoors on cleaning cloths.

  • Toss Unwanted Items
Spring cleaning isn't complete until you clean out your cabinets and closets and toss unwanted items you no longer need or use. This may include:

    • Worn-out pots and pans
    • Broken appliances
    • Damaged electronics
    • Frayed linens and towels
    • Clothes and shoes that don't fit
    • Expired foods and medications
    • Unused yard or garage items

Getting rid of unwanted items may take a while, but you will eliminate clutter and gain valuable space for new items you want or need. If things are in good shape, consider donating them to a local Goodwill or thrift store in your area.
