Summer Hikes Around Crater Lake - Klamath Basin, OR | Fisher Nicholson Realty

Southwestern Oregon is a hiker's paradise, offering some of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes in the Pacific Northwest. Crater Lake National Park is just a 90-minute drive from Klamath Falls, and there are some truly spectacular hikes in the area. Our real estate agents are excited to share some of their favorites!

  • Link River Trail - 211 N. Rogers St., Klamath Falls, OR 97601
If you're staying in Klamath Falls, think of the Link River Trail as a nice little warm-up hike close to home. This easy trail follows the Link River from Upper Klamath Lake to Lake Ewauna. It's a 3-mile out-and-back hike that offers beautiful views of the river as it tumbles through a rugged canyon just minutes from these Klamath Falls homes for sale. The Link River Trail also provides views of the "falls" that give Klamath Falls its name.

  • Cleetwood Cove Trail, Crater Lake National Park - Rim Drive, Crater Lake, OR 97604
You'll find a lot of spectacular trails in Crater Lake National Park, and the Cleetwood Cove Trail is one of the most popular. It's a fairly short out-and-back trail that gives you great bang for your buck, including expansive views of the lake, and only requires a 2.2-mile round-trip hike. But that doesn't mean it's easy! The Cleetwood Cove Trail starts at a trailhead on Rim Road and utilizes a series of switchbacks to take you down to the lakeshore. Take a break and have a snack at the lakeside dock (the only dock on Crater Lake) before you tackle the hard part—climbing back out.

  • Garfield Peak Trail, Crater Lake National Park - 570 Rim Village Drive, Oregon 97604
A moderately challenging route that ascends along the southern rim of Crater Lake, the Garfield Peak Trail is a 3.5-mile out-and-back hike that begins in forest and climbs through open meadows and craggy mountainsides before culminating in an expansive view from the summit. The Garfield Peak Trail is one of several excellent hikes that begin in the general vicinity of the Rim Visitors Center and Crater Lake Lodge; the nearby Discovery Point Trail also offers excellent lake views.

  • Pacific Crest Trail - Crater Lake Highway, OR 97604
The fabled Pacific Crest Trail stretches from the Mexican border to the Canadian border, including a 456-mile stretch across the entire state of Oregon. It passes through the Cascade Range just west of Klamath Falls and Crater Lake, crossing numerous peaks and offering some splendid summer hikes. Tackling the whole PCT is not for the faint of heart, but numerous trailheads make it possible to take on smaller sections as day hikes. The trail crosses the Crater Lake Highway just outside Mazama Village Campground within the national park, providing access to a section with some magnificent views.

  • Mount McLoughlin - NF-3650, Klamath Falls, OR 97601
About 35 minutes west of Klamath Falls, Mount McLoughlin Trail is one of the more challenging day hikes in the area. This is a 10.7-mile out-and-back to the summit of Mount McLoughlin, a dormant volcano that looms above the Sky Lakes Wilderness. After leaving the trailhead on National Forest Road 3650, the trail starts to gain elevation gently through stands of mature conifers but ascends more steeply after it crosses the Pacific Crest Trail about 1.5 miles in. All told, you'll gain 4,000 feet in elevation. Look north for a distant view of Crater Lake from the summit.
