The Klamath Falls area of Oregon is well known for its natural beauty, making it the perfect spot for a trail run. As you explore nature and improve your health, you'll be treated to views of lakes, mountains, spectacular leaves in the fall, and more. As you log more miles, they'll help you get ready for one of the area's organized runs, where you can work on your times and take in some more views. Our real estate agents recommend the following runs and practice trails to get out and about and enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
Races
- Moore Mountain Trail Run - Saturday, Sept. 16 - Moore Park, 740 Lakeshore Dr., Klamath Falls, OR 97601
You'll have your choice of three distances—30k, 13.1 half-marathon, and 5k—when participating in the Moore Mountain Trail Run. The half-marathon course has the vast majority of its route on a high-quality single track, and along the way, you'll be able to see stunning views of Upper Klamath Lake and Mt. Shasta. Be prepared to work your way through an elevation that climbs 1,600 feet along the course. For an easier run, choose the 5K, which, in addition to its shorter distance, only has a slight elevation gain.
- Brown Mountain Bigfoot Chase - Saturday, Sept. 23 - Boy Scouts of America Camp McLoughlin, OR-140, Lake of the Woods, OR 97601
Choose a distance of 40k, 10M, or 5k in the Brown Mountain Bigfoot Chase and hit the trails to see some beautiful scenery along the way. Each run starts on the banks of Lake of the Woods and works its way through three trails. Along the way, you'll see stunning views of Mt. McLoughlin. And if you'd like to make a weekend of it, stay at one of the campsites or cabins at the start and finish line.
Where to Practice
- Aspen Butte - Forest Service Road 3852, closest to Klamath Falls, OR
The Aspen Butte trail can provide a good workout with a distance of 13.3 miles and a difficulty rating of intermediate/challenging. The route also offers amazing views from Aspen Butte, the highest point in Oregon's Mountain Lakes Wilderness. Along the way, you'll be able to see Lake Harriette and Mount Harriman, and once you reach the summit, you'll be able to spot Mount McLoughlin, Mount Harriman, Pelican Butte, Upper Klamath Lake, and Mount Shasta.
- Klamath Ridgeview Trail - Several access points throughout Moore Park, 740 Lakeshore Dr., Klamath Falls, OR 97601
The 4.1-mile Klamath Ridgeview Trail is fairly easy most of the way, but a couple of steep sections increase its difficulty level. Make sure to stick to the main trail since you'll encounter junctions with other trails along the way and won't want to get off course. You'll be rewarded for your efforts with spectacular views of Upper Klamath Lake and a mature Ponderosa Pine forest.
- Mountain Lakes Loop - Mountain Lakes Wilderness area, Klamath Falls, OR 97601
Devote some time to the 15.5-mile Mountain Lakes Loop, and you'll see many gorgeous lakes along the way. Bring your backpack and camp by any of the lakes if you'd like to break up your run over an additional day or two. You'll pass by Lake Como, Eb and Zeb Lakes, and plenty of unnamed lakes during your run. If you'd like a hike two miles shorter and saves about 1,000 feet in elevation, start it from the Clover Creek Trailhead instead.
