Hit the Trail: National Walking Day Inspiration and Ideas | Fisher Nicholson Realty

The first Wednesday of every April is National Walking Day, and there's certainly no shortage of great places to go for a stroll near Tulelake homes for sale. With Lava Beds National Monument and Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge located within Tulelake, there are trails of many lengths to explore. Our real estate agents have more details on great places for a walk near Tulelake.

Visit Lava Beds National Monument – 1 Indian Well, Tulelake, CA 96134

Certainly one of the most famous attractions in Tulelake, Lava Beds National Monument is a natural wonderland, where eruptions from Medicine Lake volcano once shaped the land and the fascinating caves that you'll find waiting just underground. There are 13 trails to choose from here, most of which are fairly short and lead to points of interest around Lava Beds. If you're having trouble finding trails or just want to learn more about Lava Beds National Monument, be sure to stop by the visitor center when you arrive.

  • Heppe Cave Trail
If you want a quick walk that gives a great example of what Lava Beds National Monument is all about, Heppe Cave Trail is a great place to start. This 0.4-mile trail weaves through spectacular, mature forests, featuring juniper, mahogany, and Ponderosa pines. At the end of the trail you'll discover the amazing sight of a collapsed lava tube, and going just a little bit farther will take you to Heppe Ice Cave.

  • Bunchgrass Trail
Planning a spring camping trip to Lava Beds National Monument? You're likely to get quite familiar with Bunchgrass Trail, which connects the camping area with the Bunchgrass Overlook. The trail is about 1 mile long in total and connects to a number of other trails, including the next one on our list.

  • Three Sisters Trail
When you're in the mood for a long walk, Three Sisters Trail certainly has you covered. This trail checks in at 8.7 miles, traveling around collapsed lava tubes and through scenic wilderness areas. You can stretch the trail to over 10 miles (and turn it into a loop) by connecting with the Bunchgrass Trail and the Missing Link Trail.

Explore Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge – 4009 Hill Road, Tulelake, CA 96134

Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a massive destination, checking in at over 39,000 acres. While there aren't quite as many trails here as at Lava Beds, the fact that it's a National Wildlife Refuge means you have a great chance of spotting wildlife in natural habitats. The Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center At Tule Lake should be your first point of interest, allowing you to connect with staff, pick up brochures detailing what's available to do and discover a wide variety of wildlife programs.

  • Discovery Marsh Trail
Paved for the first 1,000 feet before turning to a crushed gravel trail, the Discovery Marsh Trail is a 1-mile loop that's level and easy to walk. You'll often find wildlife to spot along this trail, including waterfowl, deer, and coyotes.

  • Sheepy Ridge Trail
A short trail that runs just under 0.5 miles, Sheepy Ridge trail can conveniently be found near the Visitor Center parking lot. It travels up about 200 feet of elevation to the top of a rocky ridge, providing gorgeous views of the natural scenery all around you.
