  The Lava Beds National Monument is a sprawling expanse of desert that has been repeatedly reshaped by volcanic eruptions from the nearby Medicine Lake shield volcano. The mountain holds spiritual significance for many of the area's Native American tribes, and its inspiring majesty has attracted attention from people of many different faiths over the centuries. 
  
  Luckily, you don't have to climb this daunting peak to enjoy its wonders. Take a picnic lunch along and get ready to hike some of the many surrounding trails—some of which boast incredible sights like wildflower meadows and waterfalls. It's also an incredible location for photography, so bring your camera along to capture the experience.
