What is Ride the Rim?
Every year for two days in September, Crater Lake's East Rim route is closed to vehicle traffic from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Ride the Rim. This pedestrian-friendly event is an opportunity to explore the route by bike or on foot. While you can certainly take a relaxing stroll to enjoy the view, participants often treat this event as a challenge and train to tackle the route by bike. It's a very demanding ride, but that's part of the fun for many participants.
What to Know Before Signing Up
If you're signing up to traverse the route by bike, prepare for a challenge. The route closed off to vehicle traffic is 25 miles long, with quite a few steep climbs, tight turns, and fast downhill sections. However, it's not a race, and you can ride as much or as little of the course as you'd like.
Get to Know the Route
When combined with the optional West Rim Drive section, where vehicles are allowed, the route for Ride the Ride wraps fully around Crater Lake and checks in at 33 miles with more than 4,000 feet of elevation. If you stick to East Rim Drive, which is closed off to vehicles, the route is 25 miles and covers around 80 percent of Crater Lake. There are five strategically placed rest stops along the way, each stocked with snacks, bulk water for refillable bottles, basic repair tools, first aid kits, and knowledgeable volunteers from the Friends of Crater Lake. For experienced riders, the full East Rim Drive route typically takes four to five hours, with extra time added if you traverse the optional West Rim Drive section.
What to Expect on Your Ride
If you're tackling the full course, expect to be pushed to the limit. Organizers suggest that this event isn't for the faint of heart, with some seriously steep climbs that test endurance. However, not everyone is in it for the challenge. With West Rim Drive closed to vehicle traffic, you can also use this opportunity to take a walk in a beautiful location or ride a shorter, less demanding part of the route that still lets you enjoy some amazing views.
