The Klamath Basin is one of our real estate agents' favorite destinations for outdoor adventure in Southern Oregon. At its heart is the Upper Klamath Wild and Scenic River. Renowned for its whitewater rafting, the river is one of the wildest in the Northwest, and thanks to recent restoration efforts, it's wilder than it's been in decades.
Exploring the Klamath River
From the outflow of Upper Klamath Lake, the Klamath River surges through some of Oregon's most ruggedly beautiful countryside, eventually crossing over into Northern California, where it drains into the Pacific Ocean. Though it's always been a great whitewater river, its flows have been off-and-on for decades due to water being used for irrigation and hydropower.
The removal of the J.C. Boyle Dam in 2024—the largest dam removal project in U.S. history—has changed everything. Since the dam was torn down, efforts to return the river to its natural state have been remarkably successful. Salmon are once again spawning in the Upper Klamath, and new areas have been opened to whitewater rafting.
