Oregon's natural beauty is a photographer's dream come true. And one of the best places to find it is Crater Lake National Park. Located near Klamath Falls homes for sale offer numerous trails with diverse vistas. And as the leaves turn lovely fall hues, it's a perfect time to explore them and take stunning photos. Here are our favorite Crater Lake spots for hiking and photography.
A short trail, but with lots to see, the hallmark of Lady of the Woods is a sculpture of a woman, carved into a boulder in 1917 by Earl Russell Bush. This three-quarter-mile loop comes with a brochure at the trailhead, for a self-guided tour of its natural beauty and points of historical interest, including:
The area also has beautiful trees, meadows, wetlands, and wildflowers, all of which make stunning backdrops for your fall photos.
If you want to go mountain biking, head to Grayback Road. The only mountain biking trail at Crater Lake, this quiet, eight-mile trail passes through a large forest area, which is great for photos, particularly in the fall. There's also a creek, fields of wildflowers, and other amazing scenery. There are great photo opportunities for birdwatchers as well, as Grayback Road is a birding hotspot. And it's pet-friendly, too!
A slightly more challenging hike, Crater Peak Trail is 6.5 miles through forest and fields, ending at the summit of a volcano, carpeted in wildflowers. You also get great views of Klamath Basin and Union Peak. Plus, there's parking, a picnic area, and other amenities nearby. Be advised, there is snow on the trail for most of the year, typically beginning in October, so plan accordingly and dress warmly. But during September, before the snow comes, the area makes for some of the most beautiful fall photos you'll find.
If you're headed to Watchman Peak, go earlier in the day, as it tends to get crowded around sunset. However, there's a fire lookout at the top of the 1.6-mile out-and-back trail that provides a gorgeous, panoramic view of the lake, including one of the best views of Wizard Island in the area. There are also plenty of flowers, such as:
The trail is the most popular at Crater Lake, and once you go there, you'll see why.
A 2.2-mile, out-and-back trail, Cleetwood Cove Trail is the only legal access point to the shore, providing breathtaking views of the lake, the trees, and the surrounding area. It's a bit steep and fairly strenuous, but worth the climb, and your photos will be unmatched.
